How long do Timberlands last?

How long will Timberland boots last?

From the outset, Timberlands have built a reputation for durability. Their tough exterior and comfortable fit are some of the reasons why thousands of people continue to wear the signature work boots today, whether they bought them last week or picked up a pair in the last decade. From hiking enthusiasts to construction workers, bloggers to musicians, there’s a place in everyone’s shoe cupboard for a pair of beloved Timberlands.

The company began life as the Abington Shoe Company, manufacturing styles for contract work. But shareholder Nathan Swartz saw the massive potential in the brand, not just for contractors, but the world. In 1973, it was renamed Timberland and its iconic and sturdy style set out to become a go-to for both fashion and function.

While our footwear collection now boasts sneakerssandals and even boat shoes, our original work boot remains a best-seller, thanks to its dependable nature and timeless appeal. But how long does a pair of Timberlands last?

Find out how our expert craftsmanship helps them endure even the toughest environments, why the materials we choose matter and uncover some handy tips for keeping your own pair looking (and smelling) as good as new.

Built for the long haul

Longevity is a hallmark of the Timberland design. First created with the ‘working man’ in mind back in 1973, our Original 6-Inch Boots have weathered gritty construction sites, muddy fields and snow-blanketed urban streets over the last 40 years. While times may have changed, our commitment to innovation and quality remains, ensuring each boot is made to withstand the demands of your active lifestyle.

Mud, snow, rain or dirt, Timberlands are notoriously hard-wearing. With proper care, they can last for years, thanks to their premium waterproof leather outer, durable sealed stitching and tough rubber soles. Engineered to keep your feet warm and dry, they’re a classic style that will see you through any season.

Crafted to see trends come and go, you could be lacing up your Timberlands for rainy walks and city exploration long after first purchasing them. And while we understand that nothing lasts forever, a little TLC can extend the lifespan of your boots immeasurably. Take care of your Timberlands and they’ll get you where you’re going for many years to come.

Better products for a better world

Part of what makes our boots so durable is the materials we use. We’re committed to better products in every sense, not only building in longevity, but also reducing our brand’s impact on the environment. So far, we’ve given 345 million water bottles a new home within our footwear collections, with the aim of incorporating at least one renewable or recycled material into every single style we produce by 2020.

Our Original Yellow Boot is just one example of how we’ve reworked a classic for the future. This iconic design was one of the first waterproof work boots of its time. Today, it maintains its timeless appeal, but also incorporates cutting-edge technology that enhances durability and increases comfort. Forward-thinking PrimaLoft® ECO insulation, which is made from at least 50% PET (recycled plastic bottles), now insulates feet in the coldest conditions.

Meanwhile, its signature water-resistant leather is rigorously treated before construction and sourced from LGW-certified silver and gold-rated tanneries, which are judged on their waste production, energy use and water treatment.

All of this, combined with injection-moulded soles that are permanently bonded to the top of the boot, resilient hardware and rot-proof laces, creates a comfortable classic that’s ready for the toughest conditions time and again.

Timberland craftsmanship

Whether you’re pulling on your boots ready for work, hiking through rough terrain or navigating a new city, you know you can rely on your Timberlands. Genuine craftsmanship is at the heart of our designs.

We set ourselves high standards and ensure that each stitch, sole and leather hide is of the highest quality and is aligned with our sustainable outlook. This not only adds to their impressively stylish finish but guarantees they’re ready for whatever adventure (or weather) the day might hold.

Every item we produce is thoughtfully designed and masterfully created by our highly skilled team of 250,000 craftspeople, spanning 300 factories in over 30 countries. It’s in our workshops that each pair of our Original 6-Inch Boots will get four rows of precisely-sewn mildew-resistant nylon stitching. It’s where they get a glove leather lining that creates a comfortable fit and where they’re dunked in water to check they’re ready for the great outdoors.

A final quality check confirms they meet our rigorous standards before hitting the shop floor. And the official seal of approval? Our signature circle tree motif, stamped onto the buttery soft leather hide of each Timberland boot.

Fashion meets nature

Part of the appeal of Timberlands is that you won’t have to buy a new pair every season – unless you love our new Colourways, of course. Built to withstand the test of time, they’re ideal for the conscious consumer who loves fashion and the planet. But just because our resilient styles are the opposite of fast fashion, it doesn’t mean we’re not constantly striving to make our products greener.

While we may be adept at turning plastic bottles into boots and organic cotton into clothing, we’re continually finding new, innovative ways to make our company more eco-conscious. We’re nearly completely PVC-free and we’ve pledged to reduce the VOC (volatile organic compounds) in our footwear to under 42 grams per pair.

If, like us, you want to find more ways to go green, why not try to extend the life of your Timberlands further? A little elbow grease could restore them to their former glory, or you could give them a new home by donating them to charity. Depending on the condition and style, they could be sold in Traid charity shops.

How to make your Timberlands last even longer

Just like any other piece of heavy-duty equipment, a little maintenance can prove invaluable in extending the longevity of your Timberlands. We’ve developed everything you need to care for your boots and keep them looking as good as new.

Try our Balm Proofer on nubuck leather, cotton, nylon and suede styles to add an extra layer of protection to your Original 6-Inch Boots before braving the elements. Its spray formula protects your shoes from mud, water, dirt and pretty much anything else you might come across in the great outdoors.

To restore suede to its former glory, pick up our Suede Restorer Brush to gently buff away dirt. Suede and nubuck leathers can also be spruced up with a dose of our Renewbuck Foaming Cleaner, which can lift salt, mud and grass stains. Talking of fresh, how do your boots smell? The answer will be ‘like a daisy’ if you’ve taken to spritzing a little Air Raider Shoe and Boot Refresher into them recently.

Durable, strong and comfortable, nothing beats slipping your feet into a worn-in pair of Timberlands. And, if you look after them, that’s exactly what you’ll be able to enjoy for years to come.
